Getting to the Conference

Reaching the Main Conference Site on San Servolo

Most of the conference will take place on Isola San Servolo. San Servolo is a separate island in the Venetian lagoon that can only be reached by boat. All delegates will be provided with tickets to use Venice’s public transport system – called ACTV – to reach San Servolo by boat. These boats are called vaporetti.

Each morning, you need to catch the vaporetto number 20. The number 20 boat goes directly from the San Zaccaria stop near Piazza San Marco to Isola San Servolo and one other island, then back again. The San Zaccaria stop is one of the largest in the city, and hence most complex stops in the city. To find the number 20, you will need to go to pier B, which is at the eastern end of the stops, opposite a restaurant called Wildner. The summer timetable for the number 20 is available here. You will see that the number 20 leaves San Zaccaria throughout the morning, and takes 10 minutes to reach San Servolo. On arrival, you will be directed to the conference. We expect most delegates to catch the 08.40 and 09.00 boats, with stragglers catching the boat at 09.20. But of course, the number 20 will run throughout the day, to enable you to come and go from the conference.

If you are running late, or simply want to arrive at the conference in style, you can use one of the water taxis that you will find at San Zaccaria. One of these sleek and speedy taxis will bring you to the island in 5 minutes, but it will cost up to €50. If there is a large number of you, and you want the experience, consider it.

Reaching the Art Exhibition Site on Giudecca

The art exhibition will take place on a different island, called Giudecca. The venue is called Sala del Camino, in the Campo San Cosmo. Again, this island will need to be reached by boat. Delegates will also be able to use their provided ACTV public transport tickets to travel to and from the venue.

The nearest stop to the art exhibition venue is called Palanca. It can be reached using three different boats – the numbers 2, 4.1 and 4.2. You can take the numbers 2 and 4.2 directly from San Zaccaria (the stop that also takes you to the main conference venue on San Servolo) to Palanca. When you get off at Palanca, turn right and walk along the Fondamenta di S. Eufemia for a short distance, until you see an entrance on the left called Sotoportego del Pistor. Take this turning, and walk along the Calle (alley) of the same name. This will take you to the venue for the art exhibition, which will be on the right of a small green space that is the Campo San Cosmo.
